Minors & Certificate Program
We offer 2 minors and a certificate program:

- land, nature, and environmental values minor
- organizational and professional communication certificate
Technical Communication Minor
Theoretical and practical information about communicating complex scientific and technical information to different audiences. Students work on written, oral, and visual communication.
Requirements (16 credits minimum)
- WRIT 3257 (3 cr) Scientific and Technical Presentations
- WRIT 3562W (4 cr) Technical and Professional Writing
- WRIT 4561 (3 cr) Editing and Style for Technical Communicators
- 2 WRIT courses at 3xxx level or above.
Independent study is not permitted. Internships may only be taken with the minor advisor's approval.
Land, Nature, and Environmental Values Minor
Cultural issues relating to the environment. Students write an integrative senior paper relating some aspect of their major field to social, cultural, or historical trends in the larger society.
Requirements (18 credits minimum)
- 3 (minimum) of the following courses.
- WRIT 1152W (3 cr) Writing on Issues of Science and Technology
- WRIT 1315 (3 cr) The Land in American Experience
- WRIT 3302 (3 cr) Science, Religion, and the Search for Human Nature
- WRIT 3371 (3 cr) Technology, Self, and Society
- WRIT 3383 (3 cr) In Search of Nature
- An integrative paper
- WRIT 3291 (3 cr) Independent Study
At least 6 credits of related course work outside the Department of Writing Studies. Courses should be chosen with your advisor.
Organizational and Professional Communication Certificate Program
This 16-credit interdisciplinary certificate includes courses from the University's communication studies and writing studies departments. The courses focus on communication theory and practice and its effective application in organizations.
