Advising and Internships
The Advising System
Upon admission to the M.S. in STC program, the director of graduate studies (DGS) and admission committee will assign you an advisor. The advisors whom you have been assigned when you enter the program are just the DGS committee's best guess at a match between your interests and the faculty member's interests, expertise, and availability.
We want you to feel free to change advisors at any time and without any ill feeling. All you have to do is to get the approval of the new advisor, inform the old advisor, and let the DGS and program secretary know so that our records can be changed.
Internships
Internships provide experience in a professional environment and give direct exposure to the ethics and responsibilities of practice. The experience builds confidence in your ability to synthesize and apply course work. If you are enrolled in the M.S. program and plan to become a specialist in industry or government, you will be required to participate in a full-time internship of 3 months or its equivalent. The internship may be waived if your past experience makes it unnecessary.
You may complete an internship with the University, local business firms, government agencies, foundations, or research organizations. We have collected a number of resources you can use. Learn more about locating an internship.
